Notes

Rev. Charles W. Thorp (December 15, 1778 – August 30, 1827) was a clergyman born in Butternuts, Otsego County, New York, to John Thorp and Abigail Pennoyer. Around 1802, he married Hannah, whose maiden name is variably recorded in conflicting sources as Gilbert or Caze, with whom he had children including Augustus, Emily, Henry, and Amy. Initially active in local affairs, he served as the Butternuts town clerk (1806–1808) and as a deacon in the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church. He later entered the ministry and was formally ordained as the pastor of the First Congregational Church of Coventry on July 8, 1812, serving until June 1823. During his Coventry pastorate, he successfully guided the congregation through severe financial debts. In May 1821, a Rev. Charles Thorp—likely the same individual—served as moderator for the organization of the Chenango Forks Congregational Church. He died in Rochester, New York, and is buried in Brighton Cemetery.
