Caleb Jewett Tenney (1780–1847) was a Congregational minister born in Hollis, New Hampshire, to William Jr. and Phebe (Jewett) Tenney. Graduating with first honors from Dartmouth College in 1801, he was ordained pastor of the First Congregational Church in Newport, Rhode Island, serving from 1804 to 1814. In 1816, he was installed at the Congregational Church in Wethersfield, Connecticut, where he became sole pastor in 1821 and served until declining health and a loss of voice forced his resignation around 1841. A strong temperance advocate, Tenney published several discourses and helped establish the Theological Seminary at East Windsor. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Yale in 1829. Relocating to Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1842, he served as an agent for the American Colonization Society until his death. He married Ruth C. Channing, with whom he had six children.
