Notes

Rev. Samuel Merwin (1781–1856) was a Congregational minister born in Milford, Connecticut, to Miles and Abigail (Beach) Merwin. After graduating from Yale in 1802, he studied theology under Charles Backus and Timothy Dwight. Merwin was ordained as pastor of the United Society (North Church) in New Haven in 1805. During his tenure, he notably served as Vice President of the Connecticut Bible Society in 1811. Declining health led to his dismissal in 1831, after which he pastored the Wilton Congregational Church from 1832 to 1838 before retiring to New Haven, where he regularly preached at the local almshouse until his death. In 1805, he married Clarina Bradley Taylor, with whom he had multiple children.
