Notes

Joseph Hoxsie Jr. (also recorded as Hoxsey) was born on May 8, 1733, in Charlestown, Rhode Island, to Joseph Hoxsie and Mary Taylor. Residing in Rhode Island throughout his life, he established a notable legal career, serving as a Justice of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas for Kings County from 1776 to 1787, and as a Justice of the Superior Court from 1795 to 1796. Hoxsie married twice: first to Mary Peckham on December 5, 1754, in Kingston, and second to the widow Hannah (Stanton) Potter on November 1, 1798, in Charlestown. Though he fathered no children of his own, he served as guardian to his nephew Gideon. Upon his death in 1817 at approximately 83 years of age, he bequeathed the bulk of his estate to his stepdaughter, Mary (Potter) Lewis, and her husband, Simeon P. Lewis.
