Notes
Thomas Hodson, Esq., was an eighteenth-century gentleman residing at Hodson’s Bay near Athlone, County Roscommon. He married Alice Hodson, daughter of William Hodson (d. 1770), thereby becoming the brother-in-law to Daniel Hodson of St. John’s (d. 1781) and William Hodson of Athlone (d. 1779), both of whom named him in their wills. Hodson maintained a keen interest in his family’s lineage. Prompted by an inquiry from his nephew, Reverend Samuel Hodson, Thomas authored a detailed genealogical letter tracing the family’s roots to 1580 and outlining their descent from Leonard Hodson and connections to Bishop Hodson of Elphin. A notable chronological discrepancy exists in his surviving records: although the Index to Prerogative Wills of Ireland records the probate for a Thomas Hodson of Hodson’s Bay in 1797, his surviving handwritten family history letter is dated 20 March 1798.
