Notes
Joseph Chester (March 6, 1730 – August 4, 1803) was a farmer and large landholder in the North Parish of New London, presently Montville, Connecticut. Born in Groton, he was the son of John Chester and Mary Starr, a lineage supported by his father’s 1771 will despite minor uncertainty noted in one later genealogical record. Chester’s estate was situated near Oxoboxo Pond. He first married Rachel Hillhouse in 1753; following her 1754 death, a prolonged legal battle over land occurred between the Hillhouse and Chester families, ultimately decided in the Chesters’ favor. He married Elizabeth Otis in 1757, and together they had numerous children. On April 10, 1778, Chester was chosen to serve as a deacon and elder in the Montville church. He died at age 73 and is interred at the Chester Burying Ground in Montville.
