Notes
Thomas Manchester (1749–1834) was a Rhode Island clergyman, frequently identified in regional records as “Elder.” Born to Matthew and Freelove (Gorton) Manchester, he was ordained as the pastor of the Maple Root Church of Coventry in 1786 and the East Greenwich Church in 1792, serving both congregations continuously until his death. Manchester was married three times—first to Mary Potter in 1769, then to Hannah Carr in West Greenwich in 1793, and finally to Phebe Hill in 1796—and fathered over a dozen children. He died in Rhode Island at age 84 and is associated with the Manchester-Johnson burial site in Coventry.
