Notes
James Helme (March 12, 1749 – December 23, 1823) was a lifelong resident of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, living primarily in the village of Kingston. The eldest son of Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice James Helme and Esther Bernon Powell, he married Sarah Clarke in 1777 and fathered numerous children. Helme built and resided in a large, rambling structure in Kingston. He was highly regarded in his community for his amiable character. Politically, Helme was distinguished as one of the few Kingston men to persistently oppose the prominent politician Elisha R. Potter. Despite their political differences, Potter notably attended Helme’s funeral, displaying honorable emotion out of respect for his long-time neighbor and contemporary.
