Notes

Luther Baker (c. 1770–1857) was a clergyman, merchant, and legislator active in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Born in Warren, Rhode Island, to Jesse Baker and Lois Cole, he married Margaret Thompson in 1795. Baker was ordained as minister of the First Baptist Church in Warren in 1793. He served there until 1814 while simultaneously operating a store and engaging in shipping; a business failure likely hastened his departure from the pulpit. He next pastored the Second Baptist Church in Providence from 1815 to 1822. Doctrinal disagreements regarding the Trinity led Baker to leave the Baptist denomination for the Christian Church. He subsequently relocated to Massachusetts to pastor the Second Christian Church in New Bedford from 1832 to 1836. Following his resignation from regular pastoral duties, Baker served several sessions in the Massachusetts Legislature before his death in New Bedford.
